My First Taste of Pinkberry
Published by foodette June 20th, 2007 in Brentwood, Dessert, Los Angeles.
After multiple posts in anticipation of Pinkberry’s arrival, I have finally tasted it. I hate to admit this, I really do, because I so wanted to dislike it, but…. I enjoyed every last spoonful of the tangy, creamy stuff.
I actually didn’t even know that the Pinkberry down the street had opened yet until I read that Scott from Tiburos had already gone on opening night! I was very disappointed that I didn’t get to go on the first day, but who would have known they would open on a Tuesday? Shortly after reading Scott’s blog entry, my husband called me to let me know there was a huge line packed with Gen-Xers and their kids, waiting to find a new way to eat cereal. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to get home from work.
By the time my husband and I got to Pinkberry, at around 7:30, the line was just about gone - there were only a few people in front of us. Two of those people were a mother and her daughter, who was maybe 8 years old. I guess Pinkberry is where all of the polite little children hang out. When this little girl overheard me say that I have no idea what mochi (a topping) is, she actually asked me if I wanted to try hers (Of course I said, no. I’m not about to eat a little kid’s ice cream tangy frozen treat!).
After tasting the green tea flavor, which neither of us liked, we each picked a small original. I have to say, the small was pretty big at five ounces - not bad for $2.50. Where it starts to add up is the toppings. My husband got Cap’n Crunch, and I got raspberries and mangos (I only got a picture of mine - the husband ate half of his before we got out of the “no-picture-zone”). I really enjoyed the tangy flavor of the yogurt combined with the sweet, fresh fruit. I was not as big of a fan of the Cap’n Crunch topping - I really think Pinkberry tastes best with fruit. But, maybe next time I will compromise and get fruity pebbles? Or, perhaps, be adventurous and go for the mochi (can someone please tell me what that stuff is??). And, yes…I am planning a “next time”, despite the $8.50 tab on two frozen goodies.
All in all, it was a good experience. Being new, they still had a few kinks to work out. Their credit card machine isn’t running yet, and the service was pretty slow. But, I like how, when they take your order, a little sticker pops out with your name and what you got, which then gets put onto a yogurt container. Neat trick, Pinkberry.

Hi Foodette,
I was secretly betting that you would enjoy Pinkberry. And despite the photos I’ve seen of Paris Hilton and other celebs leaving Pinkberry or carrying little tubs of Pinkberry, I wanted to hate it as well but love the tangy flavor and the idea that I’m eating something somewhat healthy.
When you have a chance, you should try mochi. The texture is gummy and is made out of rice flour and sugar. I really enjoy mochi with my froyo. As testament, my Midwest born and bred boyfriend who has never tried mochi in his life had a little bit of mine and now I see him sneak some on his toppings.
Pinkberry toppings are so delish. Now I’ve tried it in New York and LA. I just came back from Niagara Falls and had some frozen yogurt by the big falling water, which I believe is called Yogen Fruz. It was actually better than Pinkberry but Yogen Fruz is not in NYC or LA so off to Pinkberry I go.
Haha, that little girl sounds so sweet! And as for your husband’s selection, I can’t say that I am surprised he didn’t go for the fruit–Cap’n Crhuch is exactly what my man would choose too. Except, if they had Fritos, he might add that as well!
I want to taste pinkberry also! the Fro yo here is really bad that I prefer green tea ice cream to them. But the serving size of Pinkberry looks so huge :O
Darlene - I laughed out loud when I read that you were secretly betting I would like it! I actually craved it all the next day, and went back and did try mochi. I have to admit, I am not a huge fan. Still, I am glad I tried it. I think the fruit wins for me - I don’t really like the cereal either.
Freedom - You are not the first person to mention Yogen Fruz. That’s apparently the only other chain that people like better than Pinkberry. I hope I get a chance to try it some day.
Passionate - I think our men would be best friends. Sugar cereals and corn chips - yep that sums up my husband as well.
Cherry - Pinkberry is unlike any other fro-yo I have had. It really almost compares with ice cream for creaminess, and the flavor is great. And 5oz was a big size!
Oh really? The buzz said that Pinkberry is more ice cream than Fro yo, and since it’s labelled healthy then people tend to consume it in large portion which credit to delayed weight loss.
Cherry - I would say that Pinkberry tastes more like ice cream than any other fro-yo. I did read the nutrition facts, and it’s apparently 26 calories per ounce, with no fat. That has been confirmed by an article that I read in the LA Times. I think people may come into problems with the toppings - sugar cereals, and oreos, and chocolate chips - oh my! But with fruit, I would say that it’s a healthy alternative to many other deserts.
foodette, send me some! i dont think i have ever seen pinkberry whatsoever here in montreal :-S i want to taste it big time since its always on any celebrity gossip websites haha
xo
I don’t get what the big fuss is about.
In the 80’s, the same thing happened, a bunch of yogurt places opened up with people saying it would replace ice cream. It was a fad back them and it a fad now. …ever heard of the 20 year cycle?
Everybody would talk about Pinkberry, but it’s not that great. My sister and I went for the first time and we expected to serve our own yogurt, our own toppings and ten different flavors! Boy were we wrong! We only had three option! How ridiculous! We also had to pay $1 extra for toppings! Will we visit Pinkberry again? NO! I’ll stick to a yogurt place that gives you more than 3 options. I do have to admit, the tart flavors were pretty good, but at least fill up the cup!
I’ve tried PinkBerry when I lived in Cali and its pretty good- moved to Toronto last year and tried YogenFruz and hands down its delicious! 10x better thank PinkBerry!
