So, most of you know that Los Angeles just got their first Michelin Guide, and that it was released yesterday.  Amazingly enough, this coincides perfectly with my husband’s and my first anniversary, which is in one week!  Yes, that means it’s on Thanksgiving.  For the actual day of Thanksgiving, we are cooking a traditional meal together, but the next night we want to celebrate and let someone else do all of the work.  And, being obsessed with the LA restaurant scene as I am, I want to dine at a newly appointed Michelin Star.

So, my question for all of you is, which Star is best?  Here is a quick list of the restaurants in LA that have obtained this coveted status (list copy-pasted from Jonah at la.foodblogging):

Two Stars:

Melisse, Santa Monica
Spago, Beverly Hills
Urasawa, Beverly Hills

One Star:

Asanebo, Studio City
CUT, Beverly Hills
Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton, Huntington (The), Pasadena
Joe’s, Venice
La Botte, Santa Monica
Matsuhisa, Beverly Hills
Mori Sushi, Los Angeles
Ortolan, Hollywood
Patina, Los Angeles
Providence, Hollywood
Saddle Peak Lodge, Calabasas
Sona, Hollywood
Trattoria Tre Venezie, Pasadena
Valentino, Santa Monica
Water Grill, Los Angeles

I haven’t been to any of these restaurants yet, and I would love some advice - which ones on here are your favorites?  Which are worth their Star(s)?

I probably only have about a day before I should make these reservations, so I appreciate any and all of your input.

Thanks!

I’ve been to Sona, Providence, and La Botte’s sister restaurant (Piccolo, which shares a menu and which I think is a much more awesome joint by virtue of it being right on Venice Beach); of the three I would choose Providence for seafood, and La Botte/Piccolo for just about everything else.

Both are quite deserving of their star, if I may compare them with the Parisian one-stars to which I am familiar.

Reservations for early dining at Providence will probably give you the most serene experience, and in general Providence is quieter than most other places I’ve eaten.

Sona, in my opinion, was just too inconsistent. I had tasted all the dishes in their tandem tasting menu (different courses for each person at the table), and they were a bit all over the place in terms of absolute marks for taste. Their desserts were nice, though.

    Good luck!

I haven’t been to any of the restaurants and the only restaurant I’m slightly familiar with is via photos and reviews the Saddle Peak Lodge in Calabasas. Looks very old school restaurant and they have consistently good reviews. But I’m looking forward to seeing which restaurant you pick. Good luck!

I was at Saddle Peak the other night for my moms bday and it was very, very good. I was a little nervous about eating some of the game dishes that they have, but to be honest, the elk was spectacular. The have a foie gras that is poached in a consomme and then cooked in a water bath and poured into a glass that was to die for. It’s a little out of the way but well worth the drive. I can see why they got a Michelin Star . . .

Thank you all for your advice. My husband and I decided we wanted to stay on the Westside, just so we didn’t have to deal with traffic on the day after Thanksgiving. After looking through menus online, we eventually decided on Valentino. It’s a place I have been meaning to try anyway, so I am completely looking forward to my one-star anniversary dinner.

Thanks again, and I’ll be sure to post the results!

I can’t help you on restaurant recommendations, but I’ll look forward to reading the review once you decide. And congrats to you both on your anniversary! What a thing to be thankful for!

    Cheers,
    Lia
